Southampton Town considers definition of public benefit from developers

In attempting to "define" public benefit you should speak only to one group of people, the public. Instead, what it appears they will try to do is use state language as an excuse for approving rezoning. Take the lead, town board, and stop the PDD land-grab." Aug 19, 10 3:46 PM

September 28 the board will be holding a PDD hearing - I hope all those who post on this site go to that meeting and demand the PDD loophole be abolished. " Aug 20, 10 12:44 PM

Mr. Blumenthal, you cannot cut taxes in the middle of the deepest recession since the great depression.

As for special needs students (you refer to them as "disabled" which is antiquated, insulting and incorrect), why is it that those of you on the right are always looking to make cuts in our children's futures? Leave education alone, special or otherwise." Aug 25, 10 7:27 PM

Does a guidance counselor work in a school? Does he get paid a salary for said work? Does he advice students? Then he is a professional educator and it is not up to you or Mr. Blumenthal to decide which children are in need of special care." Aug 26, 10 9:27 AM

Community activist from Northampton announces plan to run for Southampton Town Board

Jablome, how can we ever get anywhere in this country as long as people like you insist on lying and spreading hate? Your kind is destroying the fabric of our society, but I do take solace in knowing that you are a minority, a vocal one to be sure, but a minority nonetheless. Find happiness and success in your own life and you'll find the need to hate diminishes greatly." Aug 26, 10 3:29 PM

East Hampton Library sues Zoning Board of Appeals

Laszlo, your argument does not hold water. Libraries off so much more than just books. My kids go to our library three times a week and so do their friends and that is NOT a joke. Libraries urge children to read and rewards them for doing so in the summer and all year round. Libraries provide computers and printers to those unable to afford them. Libraries provide books to those who would otherwise not have access. Libraries teach kids and adults.

Libraries are gathering spots for the community. They are places for people to gather and learn and share. Libraries represent all that is right with our country and there is no conspiracy in that. These things cannot be digitized." Aug 27, 10 5:54 PM

Congressional candidate Cox joins anti-abortion activists in protest at Bishop's office

Mr. Cox, thankfully, you do not have a snowball's chance in _____. You and your fellow teabaggers claim to be concerned with government overreach but you want to tell women what they should and should not do with their own bodies? Pathetic, out of touch, and ignorant." Aug 27, 10 5:56 PM

70 percent of Americans wanted a public health insurance option, but we didn't get that. A majority of Americans were against desegregation and the civil rights act, but, thankfully, we got that. A majority of Americans favor gay marriage, but we don't have that. Don't tell me about a majority of Americans." Aug 28, 10 11:16 PM

Look at the image you use as an avatar. Your hatred and prejudice make you irrelevant. Keep the government our of your life but give them the power to control mine? Sorry, Joe, your hypocrisy is astounding and, despite the media's obsession with the teaparty, your numbers are dwindling and your message is overwhelmed by your fears." Aug 29, 10 4:30 PM

Joe, perhaps instead of stocking up on ammo and silver (I guess you plan on hunting werewolves?) perhaps you should dial back the hate and anger, read something about American history (not the teaparty's version, but historyy written by historians) and fight the real enemies of democracy: ignorance, fear, bigotry, and corporate power. By the way, President Obama was not put into power by Muslim overlord intent on overthrowing the US, he was duly elected by a large majority of the American public. " Aug 31, 10 10:50 AM

It never ceases to amaze me how the right always substitutes real policy and solutions with divisive social issues. They have no positive vision for moving this country forward so, instead, the right attempts to motivate with hate, fear, and bigotry. Lest we forget, abortion is LEGAL in this country. Try focusing on positive ways to help the middle class and bring people together.

Also, I love it when someone like teachourkids say something like "get a job" to someone expressing their opinion. You took time to post here, why should no one else? Why don't you tell progressivesrtoast or joehampton to get a job, they've posted more on this topic than anyone else.

The country is moving forward. The younger generations believe in living their lives and allowing others to do the same. They do not see the world in terms of race, religion, or choice. Thankfully they are the future." Sep 1, 10 11:11 AM

Tuckahoe developer defends plan

"Little people"? Please explain why this will have a "very positive" impact on my neighborhood, and please provide very specific details.

From what I can tell the majority of residents in this district, not folks from elsewhere, but people who live within a one to three mile radius of this proposed mega-mall, are against this development. They have attended meetings, written letters to the press and the town board, and gone out of their way to clearly define their opposition.

"An opportunity lost"? Only for the developers.

Back to the developer: Threats to build something worse, Mr. Morrow? Is that really how you want to play this game. You knew the zoning restrictions on this property when you bought it, but you went ahead with the purchase anyway - why? Is it because you figured your friends on the planning commission would grant you a pdd? Did you figure you could just make a few political donations and then do whatever you like and to hell with what the community thought? That may have worked if no one was paying attention, but we were and we are.

The town board knows we are watching and that we will vote accordingly. Perhaps this time the community will actually win and the developer will be forced to develop this land the way it was zoned. And by the way, affordable housing would be a welcome alternative, but you stand little to gain from it so that threat is certainly a hollow one." Sep 1, 10 11:27 PM

He will never build affordable housing, because he has nothing to gain, period. In addition, studies on affordable housing show that there is usually little to no impact on school districts as they are usually occupied by young couples without kids. Besides, educating children beats the heck our of a mini-mall." Sep 2, 10 9:05 AM

So as an alternative to "freezing time" we should simply allow developers to run roughshod until the community has lost all of its open space and all of its value? Why take sides with a developer who has no interest in the community and who purchased that parcel of land knowing the zoning but now believes he should be able to build whatever he likes. You would most likely not be afforded the same concessions unless you too had friends on the planning commission and had made large donations to all but one member of the town board.

Have you had a look around and the amount of EMPTY retail space that already exists in this area. Is there not one right-wing philosophy you are not beholden to? " Sep 2, 10 9:10 AM

The requirement calls for less than he is "threatening" to build, his entire mega-mall would contain only a couple of upstairs apartments that no one would want to buy, regardless of their income.

Besides, since when is affordable housing a threat. Bring it on, we can use as much as he wants to build and 8 more kids at Tuckahoe will make up for the loss of all of the families who have been forced to move out of the district by sky high real estate costs." Sep 2, 10 11:16 AM

Ice, had you bothered to read my post you would see that I was quoting Mr. Morrow's threat to bring 8 more students to the school district. Our school can handle 8 more students just fine." Sep 3, 10 9:41 AM

Hey, Town Board, are you reading these comments? Why not listen to the community and take steps towards rejecting this proposal outright. No change in zoning for this or any other development that does not have a larger benefit to the community than it does for the developer. " Sep 3, 10 2:33 PM

Congressional candidate Cox joins anti-abortion activists in protest at Bishop's office

I inadvertently clicked like instead of reply. Jhampton has a point and it is one that us progressives are counting on - radical ideology, left or right, does not float with the average voter. Guys like Cox are so over the top, that he helps sane, moderate, well-spoken dems like Bishop. Sorry, razzaa, you are enamored of the extreme teaparty candidates but even many republicans are repulsed by such insanity. " Sep 3, 10 5:33 PM

Three Republican candidates will battle on Tuesday for right to challenge Bishop in November

Three teapartiers clinging to policies that brought this country to economic ruin while trying to distract from their lack of qualifications by focusing on socially divisive issues like abortion.

Learn from the past, kids, tax cuts to the wealthy do not create jobs, but increase deficits and the health care reform that you like to refer to as a "government takeover" is still run by private insurers. The conservative mantle = failed policies." Sep 8, 10 9:41 AM

The month President Obama took office America was losing nearly 800,000 jobs a month. Again, the month our current President took office, we were losing 800,000 jobs a month - America lost 4 million jobs in the four months before Obama took office. The dems made it worse? I don't think so.

I do, however, agree on lower payroll taxed and affordable healthcare." Sep 8, 10 2:23 PM

razza, you are so angry and vindictive. Can't you just address the topic at hand calmly and with facts? Seriously, we know you hate democrats, but to say that Tim Bishop does not act in the best interests of his constituents is to completely ignore the fact that his constituents have elected him to office no less than four times. What you mean to say is that he does not act in YOUR best interests, so just tell us what he has done that is so terrible, besides being a democrat." Sep 8, 10 5:54 PM

You have nothing of value to contribute so you revert to puerile misogyny. Pathetic, but not unexpected. " Sep 8, 10 8:23 PM

My above comment says "tea party" and was a direct reference to the article, not any individual poster. Besides "Teabagger" is a word coined by your own teaparty compatriots when they began their "teabag congress" campaign." Sep 8, 10 9:37 PM

So his vote to do away with pre-existing conditions, to allow college kids to stay on their parent's insurance, and to keep insurance in the hands of private insurers is the terrible thing he has done? Well then I certainly hope he gets another term to continue his terrible reign of destruction." Sep 9, 10 11:00 AM

Just noticed that the Press is offering downloads of Mr. Morrow's idealized, concept art! Wow, you have crossed the line from softball journalism to actual advocation and it is inappropriate and shameful." Sep 9, 10 1:33 PM

Please provide evidence that tax breaks to wealthy produce jobs. They don't and that is why the eight years of the Bush presidency showed the lowest amount of jobs added in any decade since WWII. In the last 20 years the incomes of the top 1%have risen 210% - that's right, 210% while the income of the middle class has actually gone down when you add inflation

The month President Obama took office America was losing nearly 800,000 jobs a month. Again, the month our current President took office, we were losing 800,000 jobs a month - America lost 4 million jobs in the four months before Obama took office.

TARP was a Republican bill pushed through by Bush and Boehner BEFORE Obama took office.

Facts. Facts. Facts. " Sep 9, 10 2:37 PM
