Shinnecocks get final word, become 565th recognized tribe

An unofficial thanks goes out to the many friends of the Shinnecock Nation. Your kind words and encouragement are truly a blessing in support of the ancestral people who have held-fast through tough as well as happy times for centuries. For the handful of you who don't know us and insist on referring to us in a stereotypical, unkind manner, please remember we are well represented in the Southampton working class community. We are loving parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who are teachers, principals, office workers, soldiers, bankers, lawyers, politicians, homemakers, police officers, doctors, caregivers, insurance agents, secretaries, confidants, volunteer fire fighters, poets, fishermen, volunteer EMS, librarians, reservists, grounds keepers, nurses' aides, mentors, hospital technicians, teachers' assistants, nurses, custodians, board of education representatives, doctors, musicians, fashion designers, authors, professional world- acclaimed photographers, truck drivers, chefs, bakers, lab technicians, delivery people, sales people, teachers' aides, guidance councilors, gardeners, town and village workers, good friends,CSW's,, adjunct professors, baby sitters, massage therapists, business owners, artists, ministers, church elders, school bus drivers, students (law, business, pre-med), actresses, actors, television personalities, singers, filmmakers... The list is endless.Think about it...

I wonder if the first immigrant settlers of 1640 referred to my people, the
Shinnecocks, as " obnoxious idiots" when we taught them survival skills? We have always been the Lords (and Ladies)of the Soil and Seas. Our ancestral pride has equipped us with the strength to survive in world that has not always been very kind to us. As a 17-year, Southampton teacher, I hope I have enlightened you. Remember, it's never too late to learn." Oct 1, 10 10:41 PM
