Small Fire At Fellingham's Sports Bar In Southampton Under Investigation

It will be a very sad day if Fellinghams ever changes or closes. Glad all is well." Oct 24, 13 6:59 PM

In Sagaponack, Rooster Shooting Leads To Serious Gun Charge

I don't think anyone believes this guy is a criminal or terrorist. He did however make a serious error by firing a rifle on Long Island. Ms. Foster isn't clear about what she means when she says the .22 was a safer choice than a shotgun. Granted, safer for your teeth since you're not biting down on metal pellets, but a .22 long rifle bullet can travel well over a mile and still be travelling over 300 ft./sec at that range. Probably not lethal at that distance but it would definitely sting. There are too many people around and its pretty tough to verify there isn't someone or someone's pet within that mile or so. A shotgun, especially loaded with bird shot is lethal only at close range.
The suppressor was just plain stupid as law enforcement in this state does not want them in the hands of the public. He should pay a fine, take a hunter's safety course, and/or maybe do some community service. I don't believe he should be incarcerated, just educated." Nov 25, 13 9:04 PM

We do. Mind if I come and hunt around your neighborhood with my 30-06? Guys like this is why we need rules and laws. Rifles cannot be used safely in a populous community, especially one as flat as Long Island." Nov 26, 13 9:02 AM

East Hampton Town GOP Approves Airport Capital Improvement Plan In Party-Line Vote

I believe the GOP suffered in the last EH election largely due to their position regarding the airport. The voters spoke, and now the lame duck town board goes against the voters wishes and adopts this plan. This simply proves they represent their own interests rather than those of their constituents. I'm sure they're very proud of themselves. Sort of reminds me of the Republican House's attitude regarding the ACA. " Dec 3, 13 8:43 PM

Agreed that the ACA is off to a bad start due to incompetent website design. It looks like this is/will be fixed. My point is the voters reelected Obama partly due to the ACA, it became law and the house ignored the will of its constituents, trying fruitlessly to stop its implementation. This situation is different in that the outgoing board is rushing to adopt a plan that would not pass if the newly elected board were in place." Dec 4, 13 8:20 AM

Let's just wait and see about the ACA. I disagree with you about most Americans being opposed. If that was the case I don't think O could have won...

I don't want the airport closed...I just think the air traffic should be routed over the south coast and the Georgica area where the people who utilize private aircraft generally reside." Dec 4, 13 11:29 PM

UPDATE: Former Officer Of The Year Identified As Trespass Suspect

It must be nice to be in a union that makes sure you get paid (read vacation) when suspended for bad/possibly illegal behavior.
" Jan 20, 14 6:23 PM

Agreed it comes in handy. So why don't we all enjoy this protection? At least if the charges are proven true and/or he is dismissed, his pay during suspension and pension should be forfeited..." Jan 24, 14 5:19 PM

Oddone Pleads Guilty To Manslaughter Charge

I'm not sure whether you are implying that the inmates would have killed him (doubtful) or that the corrections officers would have taken the law into their hands and meted out their own sentence. Either way your comment is not very complimentary of the COs abilities or sense of justice and the rule of law..." Mar 1, 14 3:31 PM

Sag Harbor Village Washes Hands Of Pierson Safety Issue

It's so good to see everyone in the village working together to solve this...

I've been reading a lot lately about later school start times which seems only sensible. It occurs to me that more students would utilize bus services if they were not getting picked up so early.I think a lot of kids get dropped of by parents because they want to avoid a long bus ride before already starting school at a ridiculously early hour. Doesn't seem like kids should have to get on a bus before sunrise to be at school on time!" Mar 19, 14 8:34 AM

Starbucks Plans Hampton Road Location; Southampton Mayor Won't Support Store

The Kardashians are OK, but not Starbucks??? If Starbucks is in compliance but still denied approval I hope they sue the village into bankruptcy. We are a democratic, capitalist society and the government cannot arbitrarily inhibit the free market." Jul 4, 14 7:18 PM

Tribute To Slain Nun Is Flash Point For Southampton Town Officials

Alex McGregor is one of very few elected officials who fulfills the obligations of his position with disregard to politics.
ATH would do well to look to Mr. McGregor for clues on how to be be a public servant rather than a political hack. (North Sea Road at Cromer's is looking good these days)
Example paraphrased from ATH: "There is no need to regulate plastic grocery bags in Southampton as it will have a negligible impact on our pollution issues." Way to lead! I guess Citarella's must use plastic bags!" Jul 30, 14 6:00 PM

Jewish Religious Boundary Goes Up In Westhampton Beach

The simple fact here is that there are members of a religion who find their own rules to be inconvenient. So they make up a silly exception that allow them to act as they please without concern that their make believe deity will punish them. I for one am still very careful not to step on cracks out of concern for my mother's back..." Aug 8, 14 6:14 PM

Jewish Religious Boundary Goes Up In Westhampton Beach

If people truly have faith in their inherited or chosen religion there is generally a belief that the tenets of that religion were somehow dictated by their god. The point is that they follow a creed that is supposedly the word of their god.

I find it very curious and extremely brazen that adherents of religions dare to find work arounds for the parts they don't care for. I mean if their god said it then who are these mere humans to just pick and choose the parts they like? They're like accountants looking for loopholes in the tax code.

So Jews build in Eruv, Catholics go to confession every week and swear they are heartily sorry for using birth control and then use it again that night. Religion by its nature creates hypocrites. Fundamentalist believers start wars over their myths and have killed millions over the years in the name of their made up gods.

The Eruv in WHB has no meaning except to those who use it to dilute their dogma for their own convenience. The larger problem is that the same beliefs that require an Eruv, or a prayer rug facing Mecca, or no fish on Friday are causing entire cultures great pain and fomenting what are essentially just tribal wars. Just ask the citizens of Gazans." Aug 9, 14 11:27 AM

Well said Mr. Z. "Any way you slice it, it's ducking out on your alleged "faith" and the rules thereof. If you can't handle it, maybe one should convert to a "faith" or other mythology which is more suitable to one's lifestyle."

Most members of organized religions are hypocrites." Aug 12, 14 7:54 PM

Yes you are reading correctly. There are several options and these comments are directed towards ALL religious adherents not only Jews:

How to get around (cheat) the Sabbath rules.

You could pay someone to do the work for you; cooking, driving, turning lights on/off, etc.
You could invest in technology to automate those tasks not allowed.
You could an erect an Eruv (get out of jail free zone).
You could comply with the spirit of your religion's rules.
You could just admit that people twist doctrine to suit their own shallow commitment to a religion they don't really honor.

Organized religions are a joke perpetrated by greedy, selfish clergy who crave power and money. Through fear, they cajole their followers to give them money thus power and influence, that enable them to perpetuate the cycle." Aug 15, 14 7:51 PM

Police Looking For Man Who Stole Handbag From Southampton Village Store

Who put up the money for the reward? If it was the police, why?

It's ironic that the shop is being sued for selling a similar handbag alleged to be a knock off. From the NY Post, 8/6/14: "Gynecologist Tara Allmen is suing the owner of Southampton shop Collette, saying she bought the pricey bag — which sells for $20,000 new — for $3,425 at the vintage store in 2005, with assurances from store clerks that it was authentic.
But Allmen learned she had been duped, her Manhattan Supreme Court suit claims, when she brought the orange Jean Paul Gaultier-designed shoulder bag to the Hermès store on Madison Avenue for a cleaning in 2013."" Sep 22, 14 1:33 PM

UPDATE: PSEG Completed Tree Trimming On County Road 39

Love this quote from ATH:
"I guess they have to do it in daylight," she said. "I guess they weren’t aware of the traffic delays. We’ll look into that.”

Then this PSEG Quote:
“We live here, we work here, we’re part of the fabric of the community. We are aware of the traffic concerns, especially at the Sunrise Highway merge,”

The incompetence and indifference at all levels is mind numbing..." Oct 7, 14 2:46 PM

Former Montauk Resident Sentenced After Illegally Spying On Tenants

What a joke! 5 years probation and not a registered sex offender??? He plead guilty to over a dozen felony counts! The judge felt “he didn’t have a predisposition for that type of behavior.” I guess placing 15 cameras throughout your property aimed to capture photos of genitals is not predisposition. Is he getting a first class plane ticket back to FL. as well?

Why isn't the judge named in the article? Please keep in mind her name (Barbara Kahn) the next time you see her on a ballot." Oct 9, 14 6:09 PM

Sag Harbor School District To Consider Eliminating Valedictorian And Salutatorian

It wasn't so much the policy but the way it was handled. Ms. Luck was informed she was the Salutatorian, had received an invitation to the Fred Thiel's luncheon to honor the top achieving students in his district and then the administration (after they read their own very vague rules) said "oops!" They then rescinded the award and refused to discuss it any further. It was a pretty embarrassing situation for the school, and nothing was done to mitigate it." Oct 27, 14 5:21 PM
